Ford comes up with a smart multiplug for EV charging

Ford has patented a technology allowing the simultaneous charging of multiple EVs from a single source. If implemented on the mass market, the innovation may mitigate the lack of charging stations, CarBuzz reports referencing the patent filings describing the various designs.

While it may sound overly simple, actually using a single source for charging multiple EVs requires the cars having a bidirectional charger on board. Some of the latest EVs – the ones you can use to power up external appliances – already support this function on a native level. However, to balance the load and avoid overheating, the company is offering a more sophisticated multi-charger design.

Car owners or charging station attendants will be able to set up the percentage levels to which each of the plugged-in cars needs to be charged. The FordPass mobile app will enable owners to formulate their custom charging rules and preferences.

Aside from public charging outlets, the novelty may find use in private households with multiple EVs in the family. Dealerships that often encounter the need to charge up multiple cars simultaneously before delivery may also appreciate the multiplug.
