Ford Fiesta goes hybrid in Europe

Some time ago, Ford promised us to launch part-electric versions of its entire light passenger car range in Europe until 2021, meaning a total of 18 such vehicles. Today, first bits of information were released regarding the Fiesta hatchback.

In its hybrid version, the Fiesta looks pretty much the same as its gas-chugging counterpart, but gains a 48-volt engine starter/generator that assists it during acceleration and saves up to 10% of fuel.

The EcoBoost Hybrid drivetrain the model comes with is identical to that of the Puma crossover SUV. It incorporates a one-liter turbocharged gas engine and a six-speed manual transmission, and delivers either 125 or 155 hp (93 or 116 kW), depending on your chosen option.

The torque is a different story. The electric motor on the new Fiesta packs noticeably less torque than the Puma one, specifically 24 Nm (18 lb-ft) in all-electric mode and 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) in assist mode. The Puma has 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) and 20 Nm (12 lb-ft), respectively.

Other, non-hybrid options include the EcoBoost 1.0 engine good for 95 or 125 hp (71 or 93 kW), as well as the 1.5-liter diesel turbo churning out 85 hp (63 kW). Mixed-cycle gas consumption averages at 5 liters per 100 km according to the WLTP measurement protocol. Diesel models are more efficient in this regard with 4.3 liters / 100 km. The old six-speed automatic transmission is no longer available, replaced by a new dual-dry-clutch transmission with pre-selection capability.

As far as the features are concerned, the new Fiesta boasts adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, automatic braking when reversing, and the FordPass mobile app for easy access to various in-car functions.
