Barely-driven 1st-gen Ford GT goes up at an auction

Sotheby's Auctions will soon be holding a sale dedicated to, among other things, this first-generation Ford GT supercar with as few as 18 kilometers (11.7 miles) on its odometer. The vehicle rolled off the assembly line equipped with a rear-wheel drive and trimmed to the top specification.

In fact, this particular GT counts among only 327 cars to emerge in the top trim version. Compared to their less well-to-do peers, these vehicles came equipped with a range of options such as BBS forged wheels, red brake calipers, a McIntosh multimedia system, and a custom livery adorned with pinstripes. The whole package cost an extra U.S. $13,500.

Powering the rare Ford GT is a 5.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine rated at 550 hp (410 kW). Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, it takes the supercar from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.3 seconds before maxing out at 330 km/h (205 mph).

At the time of writing, the highest bid was U.S. $235,000.

The original Ford GT coupe was designed as an homage to the iconic GT40 racecar that scored its first 24 Hours of Le Mans victory in the 1960s and proceeded to win the race four times after that.
