The auction house RM Sotheby's will soon be holding sales of a unique Ford GT40 supercar produced back in 1966. The 52-year-old vehicle may fetch up to U.S. $12,000,000.
The rich racing history of this particular Ford GT40 justifies the eight-digit sum at least to a certain degree. The vehicle participated in the 24 Hours Le Mans 1966. Piloted by the Holman and Moody team, it claimed the bronze medal of the tournament. Remarkably, all awards of that year’s championship went to U.S.-produced Ford GT vehicles, leaving the Ferrari team without a single prize.
Many years after its retirement from big racing, this copy of FordGT40 still took part in retro car races and other competitions. It claimed the Viewers’ Special Award at the Elegance Contest held in Pebble Beach, California, USA.
The car has been completely restored to its former beauty and glory. Its engine compartment now holds a 7.0-liter V8 engine almost 500 hp / 370 kW strong.
The same car model wearing a unique paintjob by the oil company Gulf was auctioned off at U.S. $11 million six years ago. This one may fetch up to $12M, experts say.
