Ford has confirmed that its first electric car based on the Volkswagen MEB architecture will be a crossover SUV marketed as a more affordable alternative to the Mustang Mach-E.
The car will be revealed in the first half of 2022 and go into production in Cologne a year after that. It will be technically similar to the VW ID.4, which is currently being produced in Zwickau. As such, it should be available in both single-motor/RWD and dual-motor/AWD variants. The latter might arrive packing around 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW) and get the ‘GT’ model suffix, like the Mach-E GT.
According to rumors, the overall styling will be similar to that of the ID.4, but not identical. The company might decide to stylize it after the popular Bronco Sport model since the latter won’t make it to Europe.
The interior could be unitized with that of the China-made Ford Evos, which is featured in our gallery and the video here. If so, then a huge dash display 1.1 meters (nearly 4 feet) across could be its main feature. Ford mentioned an intention to upgrade the entire range with new Android-based infotainment systems.
The factory in Cologne will be getting $1 billion in investment for the sake of modernization, but it will continue to produce the Fiesta for three or four more years. Later on, that model will be phased out in favor of the abovementioned compact crossover SUV running on VW tech.
