Ford has claimed the rights for a ‘Mondeo Evos’, leading media to suspect that the Mondeo/Fusion/Taurus range is not going to be put out of production after all.
In 2018, Ford made a decision to trim down its light passenger car range in favor of pursuing more profitable market segments – specifically, SUVs and premium cars. The widely popular Ford Mondeo family car series, known as the Fusion in the USA and the Taurus in China, could very well be among the first to be discontinued.
Since the company has patented ‘Mondeo Evos’, this may mean that the series will get at least one more generation before retiring. If this becomes the case, it will likely get new hybrid and all-electric variants.
Another opinion states that an off-road-capable estate/wagon based on the Subaru Outback platform will come to replace the Ford Mondeo in its market niche and maybe inherit its name. The S-Max and Galaxy MPVs may become redundant and follow the Mondeo in retirement if this happens.
The original Evos Concept emerged in 2011 and served as a design study for the current-gen Mondeo/Fusion/Taurus.
In Europe, the range received a slight overhaul early this year and is going to remain in production until at least the end of 2021. That said, the sales are slowly declining.
