The U.S. automotive giant has confirmed the ongoing rumors that the Mondeo sedan and wagon line will permanently retire in Europe in March 2022, twenty-nine years since the launch.
A Ford representative said ‘multiple reasons’ were to blame for this, including an evolution of customers’ preferences and the need to optimize the Europe lineup. The preferences part obviously refers to the popularity of SUVs, while the latter bit probably restates Ford’s intention to electrify its entire EU model range by 2030.
This is not to say that the Mondeo will depart without an heir. Judging by a silhouette projected onto a building back in February, a successor is coming up to replace it. Rumor has it that the car will be part-electric and named Evos. A wagon/crossover mashup may also be a valid replacement.
