Ever since Ford launched its Mach-E battery SUV with the Mustang logo slapped on, people have been making up theories about what to expect next. A particularly interesting bit of conjecture emerged today.
An anonymous source reports that Ford is thinking about releasing a compact crossover vehicle based on the Volkswagen MEB platform. The two companies announced their partnership in early 2019; according to the source, their engineering departments are currently joining efforts on adapting the platform to fit the Mustang body.
The main difficulty, allegedly, lies in reshaping the front end for a longer, sportier appearance characteristic of the Mustang. The latest MEB-based vehicle – the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback – sports a short front overhang.
MEB has been designed to be compatible with all kinds of drivetrains, including all-electric, and supports engines rated up to 306 hp (228 kW) and batteries as large as 111 kWh.
