Ford Mustang ditches its four-cylinder in Europe

The drive towards environmental cleanliness is commendable, but it doesn’t help if your customers want a traditional V8 experience, rather than a lackluster EcoBoost four-pot.

Despite the sports car aura of the ‘Stang, customers in the United States are actively buying it with a 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder under the hood. In fact, this spec accounts for nearly a half of total Mustang sales in select U.S. states. However, things look drastically different in Europe and particularly Great Britain, where only around 15% owners chose this mill.

The four-pot Mustang option has already disappeared from Ford’s official website for Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Those still willing to grab a pony can choose between a GT Coupe and a GT Convertible. Both cost a minimum of €49,300 and produce 449 PS / 443 hp / 330 kW. Another option comes in the form of the Mach 1 Coupe priced at €60,800 and capable of 460 PS / 454 hp / 338 kW.

Ford has sold only 27,417 Mustang units in the Old World countries in 2018–2020, a small fraction of the 209,421 units sold in the States over the same period.
