Video: $400 Ford Mustang accelerates like a rocket

The third generation of the Ford Mustang is nearly four decades old by now, making it pretty much only usable for restoration and tuning. On the upside, the aftermarket is still full of spare parts, and Deon – who bought his 1985 ‘Stang for $400 – took advantage of the fact.

The stock engine is gone, making room for a Windsor V8 bored out to 7.2 liters of displacement and boosted to 710 PS (700 hp / 522 kW). An old-fashioned carburetor is tasked with delivering the fuel to the ignition chamber, and a five-speed Tremec gearbox sends the momentum to the rear wheels.

Having overhauled the drivetrain, Deon switched his attention to the front fascia and the cabin. Rather than reinventing them like some restomod builders do, he simply acquired some 1991 Mustang parts and installed them for a slightly fresher look.

Despite wearing drag radials and sprinting like a leopard, the fox-faced Mustang is actually road-legal in Sourthern California, and is a trusty daily driver for its creator.
