Rumor: Next-gen Ford Mustang keeps old engines, but goes hybrid

The seventh generation of the Ford Mustang will still use the same engines as its predecessor, Ford Authority claims citing own sources. Both the 5.0-liter V8 and the 2.3-liter four-pot turbo will remain – but not without electrification.

In an earlier interview, a Ford representative said the V8 would have to be modified to comply with the latest environmental standards. This must mean partial electrification. The way we see it, the pony car would continue driving its rear wheels with the main engine, while an electric motor might be added to the front axle. If such a Mustang does come out, chances are high it will ditch manual transmission.

In the meantime, spy photos suggest that the Mk7 Mustang gets a new radiator grille, headlights and front bumper while remaining recognizable on the whole.

The launch is not expected until next year.
