Coal-rolling Ford Mustang goes up from 620 to 1,282 horsepower

A few years ago, we reported about a U.S.-based car enthusiast named Westen Champlin who had produced quite a few eccentric-looking custom cars. One of the highlights was this Ford Mustang running on diesel power, which has now received an extreme makeover.

As you may remember, the muscle car was swapped to a 5.9-liter six-cylinder diesel mill normally rated at 234 PS (230 hp / 172 kW) and 597 Nm (440 lb-ft) of torque. Normal obviously didn’t cut it, so Champlin had it boosted to insane 620 PS (612 hp / 456 kW) and 2,033 Nm (1,500 lb-ft) of torque with the help of a massive turbo setup.

Even then, the car was already beginning to look impractical due to and exhaust pipe spewing black smoke straight from the engine bay and the rates at which its tires died. But the tuner believed there was more to be done and replaced the old diesel mill with a new one rocking 6.1 liters of displacement and dual turbos. He then proceeded to dial the system up to ludicrous 1,282 PS (1,264 hp / 943 kW) and nearly 3,000 Nm (2,200 lb-ft) of torque. Mind you, both were measured at the wheels using a dyno.

Now, we may understand why many people are opposed to the idea of coal rolling, but this particular ‘Stang will most likely never hit the streets. Even assuming that it does, it will probably barely have enough range to go from one tire shop to another.
