Ford promises to reveal a drag-focused Mustang EV on Thursday

Ford Performance will ‘expand the limits’ with a premiere of a new drag strip racecar on April 13, 2023. The short video accompanying the announcement, lightning symbols on the teasers and the black-and-white checkered flag motifs make us believe it will be an all-electric take on the classic Ford Mustang coupe.

The video is in low quality, but if you watch it slowed down you may notice a racing-grade wheel wrapped in an impressive drag tire, a modest-sized wheel at the rear end to protect the car from toppling over, and a brake chute. The bumper has ‘Super Cobra Jet’ written on it in a reference to the automaker’s muscle car classics of the 1960s and ‘70s.

All of the above puts us in mind of the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 dragster that Ford Performance first revealed three years ago (shown in the gallery). Despite the numeric index, the sixth-gen ‘Stang had even more power at its disposal – 1,522 PS (1,500 hp / 1,120 kW) coming from four electric motors. It also maxed at 1,491 Nm (1,100 lb-ft) of torque and left the quarter-mile strip behind in record-breaking 8.27 seconds, crossing the finish line at 270 km/h (168 mph).

Judging by the new teaser, the car set to debut on Tuesday is even wilder than that.
