Ford will be releasing a small series of Mustang muscle cars that are said to win the quarter-mile drag race against the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, despite the latter packing an 850-horsepower (634 kW) engine.
The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet comes equipped with a 5.2-liter, eight-cylinder engine, which is essentially an improved version of the standard Mustang motor. With even more displacement room and a better supercharger, the new Cobra Jet vehicle finishes a quarter-mile streak in 8.5 seconds – a full second faster than the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. Too bad the manufacturer did not provide any kind of detailed specifications.
Among other things, the reworked Ford Mustang series comes equipped with a twist-beam rear suspension instead of independent one. This enables it to accelerate faster when going in a straight line. New hydraulic dampers enable the driver to adjust road clearance at will.
The vehicle qualifies under “racecar” category and is not street-legal like the main series. It even has racing-grade seats and a roll cage.
A total of 68 vehicles will be produced and sold at U.S. $130,000.
