Ford has been producing drag strip-oriented Mustang builds for over half a century, but the electric concept car it shows us now marks a new milestone.
The newcomer goes by the name Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 and packs 1,400 horsepower (1,044 kilowatts) along with 1,491 Newton-meters (1,100 pound-feet) of maximum torque. It needs less than eight seconds to zap through the standard quarter-mile (402m) drag strip and hits 275 km/h (171 mph) near the finish line.
To put things into perspective, the current drag strip king is the Mustang Cobra Jet, which packs a 5.2-liter V8 engine chugging gas. Its nominal output isn’t disclosed, but the car generally concludes a drag race in between 8 and 8.5 seconds, accelerating to around 240 km/h (149 mph) towards the finish. Only 68 units exist worldwide.
It remains unknown whether the all-electric prototype shown today will actually go into production or not. At any rate, Ford plans to showcase it in action during this year’s drag racing championship.
