21-year-old Mustang Cobra R bid to $80k thanks to low mileage

A 2000 Ford Mustang Cobra R – number 224 out of 300 units made – is set to sell for more than $80,000 USD at an auction ending in a few days, surpassing the $72,900 of the newest Shelby GT500.

The secret is in the mileage: the rare car has only 365 miles, or 587 kilometers, on the odometer. It also packs a 5.4-liter engine with forged aluminum components, 385 PS (380 hp / 283 kW), and 522 Nm (385 lb-ft) of torque. A six-speed Tremec manual transmission sends the momentum to the wheels through a limited-slip differential.

Elsewhere, the car takes advantage of per-wheel suspension based on Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks, Brembo brakes, and a Borla exhaust system with tips sticking out in front of the rear wheels. You will recognize it by the special rear wing, a bulging hood and different bumpers lacking anti-fog lamps at the front end (there are extra air intakes in their place now). To minimize the weight of the car, it shipped without audio, AC or rear seats.

This particular example had sat in a dealership for four years until an employee bought it out, becoming its sole owner.
