Bring-a-Trailer has just concluded a sale of a fairly rare Safari-style Ford Mustang SportsRoof made in 1973. The winning bidder paid $32,000.
According to the seller, the whole project started when he purchased the muscle classic in 2024 and wanted to give it a mild Mach 1-inspired refresh. Things took a wild turn when he spontaneously decided to throw in an off-road suspension setup with custom shock absorbers and control arms, as well as ball joints and rear leaf springs. To support the modifications, he installed Magnum 500-style wheels shod in Mickey Thompson Baja Legend MTZ tires sized 31x10.5 inches large.
The exterior was redone in the Mach 1 aesthetic and upgraded with extra lighting, a roof rack and a Ram Air hood. The stock 5.7-liter V8 also received some attention, ending up with an Edelbrock intake, tubular headers and a MagnaFlow exhaust system complete with an X-pipe. There was no mention of the output, but we suppose it should be at least on par with the standard 243 PS (240 hp / 177 kW). The transmission is three-speed automatic, and the drive is on the rear axle.
The listing mentioned a few concerning details, including a VIN number mismatch and a title that actually refers to the car as a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 (instead of SportsRoof). There are also some visible panel gaps, and some wiring in the cabin has dropped out of the trim, dangling loose. Since these issues were clearly mentioned by the seller, we suppose whoever bought this wild Safari build knew what they were going for.
