In its monthly production volume and sales statement, Ford has highlighted a remarkable fact: the production quantities of the Mustang Mach-E have lately exceeded those of the ICE-based Mustang muscle cars.
In January through May 2021, the factory in Mexico has pieced together 27,816 all-electric cars with the Mustang badge on them. The Michigan site has only produced 26,089 gas-powered muscle cars over the same period, counting both coupes and roadsters. The fact has somehow managed to elude media attention for a while, but there is no denying its importance for Ford and the industry as a whole.
This is not to say the classical Mustang fell out of popularity: despite going through its sixth generation, the 2014MY pony maintains its “best-selling sports car” status on the North American market. Granted, the demand has been steadily falling year-to-year, from 122,349 units sold in 2015 to only 61,090 in 2020.
