Why could GM be testing a Ford Mustang Mach-E?

Automakers spend a lot of money making sure their cars are viable on the market they are meant for, which includes studying the competition. Every now and then, a brand gets caught on camera testing its new car alongside one or more competitors. But General Motors testing a Ford Mach-E alone on the Milford track? Color us perplexed.

The photos originate from the GM Authority website, which also does not offer a simple explanation. The white electric SUV has testing equipment and wrap in some areas. A white sticker at the rear end says it is an internal testing vehicle. But why would General Motors want a Ford SUV run laps alone, unaccompanied by any other GM car for comparison purposes?

Perhaps a part of the reason is that the corporation has ambitious plans for the next decade. Its electrification strategy involves designing and producing dozens of transports, including crossovers. Ford has a significant amount of head start in this regard with EV pre-orders in the six-digit territory. Perhaps GM tries to assess what it needs to rip off… sorry, what it needs to do right to stay relevant on the market.
