Old Tech vs. New: gas-powered Mustang GT races the Mach-E

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a highly acclaimed electric crossover SUV on the market today, but many take issue with the naming. Carwow decided to test and see if the battery-powered crossover has what it takes to outrun a purebred muscle car.

The drag race was held between two maxed-out cars, the Mustang Mach-E GT and the Mustang GT. The crossover made use of two electric motors with 487 PS (480 hp / 358 kW) and 860 Nm (634 lb-ft) hitting all four wheels. The classic pony cheated a bit: its 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 was dialed up to 490 PS (483 hp / 360 kW) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque to even out the odds. Still, for the older car, the entire torque goes exclusively to the rear wheels, which can also make a big difference.

On the upside, the coupe is much lighter than the crossover. On the downside, it needs time to hit max torque, whereas the Mach-E enjoys it from the start.

In other words, you can expect the races to be very fast and entirely unpredictable. Watch and see for yourself how the two 'Stangs compared!
