13-year-old Shelby GR-1 Concept hits mass production at last

Car manufacturer Ford has finally authorized California-based tuner Superformance to release a series of cars based on the Shelby GR-1 Concept that debuted in 2005. The negotiations took six years to complete.

According to the media representatives who attended the recent Shelby Tribute event, Shelby American undertakes to supervise the small-batch production that will start soon.

Shelby VP Vince LaViolette has promised to make the new sports car so fast as to be able to sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in two seconds flat.

The first 200 Shelby GR-1 vehicles will be released with aluminum bodies, while the rest of the batch will take advantage of all-carbon bodywork. There will be a gasoline and an all-electric version to choose between, but their respective specifications remain unannounced.

The market launch is scheduled for 2021.

For the reference, the 2005 Shelby GR-1 Concept came equipped with a 6.4-liter, naturally-aspirated, 10-cylinder engine capable of 614 hp (458 kW).
