Video: Firefighters destroy a Mustang Shelby GT500

Firefighters undergo regular training to be able to pull survivors from deformed and flaming car wrecks with due speed and efficiency – but even so, witnessing them deliberately burn down a gorgeous 770-hp muscle car instead of a junkyard jalopy can be harrowing.

The video follows a firefighting crew from Dearborn, Michigan, as it professionally destroys a Rapid Red Mustang Shelby GT500 outfitted with the Carbon Fiber Track Package. That’s around $100,000 USD down the metaphorical drain. What’s the purpose?

Actually, the answer is rather trivial. The pony car featured in the footage was a pre-production unit that Ford had used for some heavy-duty testing. As such, it was meant to be destroyed under an industrial press anyway – no way to make it road-legal and keep it around. So, maybe burninating it for a higher purpose wasn’t such a bad decision, after all.
