Ford has introduced a new Puma ST spec for the Old World countries. It is the same EcoBoost 1.0 three-pot turbo that powers the standard Puma, but slightly boosted and electrified for faster sprints.
Specifically, the three-cylinder mill gets additional 15 horsepower along with 10 Nm of torque for a total of 170 PS (168 hp / 125 kW) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft). A 48-volt starter contributes another 16 PS (16 hp / 12 kW) during acceleration. In hybrid mode, the combined output is capped at 170 PS (168 hp /125 kW) and 248 Nm (183 lb-ft) of torque.
The transmission is seven-speed DCT. Compared to its 1.5-liter cousin, the new Puma ST is obviously still weaker, so it needs an additional 0.7 seconds to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) – 7.4 seconds, to be precise.
The original 1.5-liter version of the SUV remains available for the time being, but it only ships with manual transmission, and the overwhelming majority of European car buyers tend to prefer two pedals instead of three. As such, it is quite likely that the 1.5L version goes discontinued soon.
