Ford Ranger gets a hydrogen conversion Down Under

Australia-based car company H2X Global has unveiled a pickup truck named the Warrego, basically a Ford Ranger with a fuel cell powertrain underneath.

The concept truck was born out of an engineering experiment, but the company has since received quite a few calls from interested customers. Furthermore, Liberty Energy Capital – a national foundation supporting renewable energy businesses – agreed to fund the project.

All we know about the technical properties of the hydrogen pickup is its nominal power output (around 95 hp / 70 kW) and carrying capacity (1.5 metric tons / 3,300 lbs). The company hopes to wrap up prototype tests later this year and launch limited-run production for Australia and Europe. The first buyers will be able to receive their trucks next spring.

Later on, H2X Global intends to diversify the offer with different cab and drive types. It also considers launching a compact van named the Darling, which is going to be based on a proprietary platform. Higher-end powertrains are also on the list.
