Ford Torino receives a $0.2M restoration, heads to an auction

A 1970 Ford Torino restomod with a unique combination of powertrain, option packs and exterior finish will go on sale in Scottsdale, Arizona in late January. The price is not mentioned, but rumors claim the restoration alone cost $200,000 USD.

In 1970, Ford seriously redesigned and improved its Torino muscle car, which had previously been simply a version of the Fairlane. It ended up with a brand-new exterior and a new lineup of modifications, as well as a 7.0L V8 429 SCJ flagship spec. The abbreviation stood for Super Cobra Jet, and the car produced 375 PS (370 hp / 276 kW).

The coupe heading to the auction is also an SCJ, which means it has a Sportsroof aerodynamic top and special lights all around. It also benefits from a Drag Pack upgrade changing gear ratios for drag racing. The same package includes forged pistons, a performance carburetor and other engine improvements.

In addition to the above, this particular example has rotor brakes at the front end, Magnum 500 wheels and a radio receiver with an extra pair of rear speakers.

The auction holder claims this exact car starred in a launch photo set for Motortrend in 1970. Only 241 coupes were put together with this combination of engine and options that year, and only one of them was finished in Calypso Coral, making it unique.
