The GAC Era is a transforming hydrogen SUV with no production prospects

GAC has taken the wraps off the unique Era Concept at the Guangzhou expo. The four-seater SUV is 5,413 mm (211.45 in) long and has a transformable passenger space. It will never reach production, but may inspire some of the company’s future models.

The starkly geometrical upright front end contrasts with a curvy, elongated rear. Should the driver want it, a part of the car body will move down a bit and the tailgate will rise, transforming the coupe-like crossover into something like a pickup truck.

The same gimmick applies to the cabin. Once rearranged, it resembles a tea parlor with a folding table in the middle and freely swiveling seats all around. The driver gets a touchscreen display spanning the entire dashboard width, and more haptic interfaces can be found on the doors and the transmission tunnel.

Two electric motors jointly rated at 548 PS (541 hp / 403 kW) cater for the propulsion. The electricity is provided by a hydrogen fuel cell array and is enough for roughly 800 km (500 miles) of driving, the manufacturer claims.
