1,224-PS hypercar breaks cover in China

Chinese automaker GAC has posted some photos and specifications of the Hyper SSR, an all-electric coupe set to debut on its domestic market under the Aion badge. CarNewsChina believes the starting price will be 1,286,000 Yuan ($176,000).

At 4,556 mm long, 1,988 mm wide and 1,230 mm tall with 2,650 mm between the axles, the hypercar is comparable in size to the Ferrari 458 Italia. Not just that, but it also has vaguely similar styling cues. Despite riding on 20-inch wheels and donning an aero kit with an active spoiler, it manages to look understated. The downforce is rated at a low 100 kg (220 lbs). Some of the bodywork is carbon.

The interior is just as laconic, dominated by a squared-off steering wheel and a 14.6-inch multimedia display. The instrument cluster is digital, measures 8.8 inches corner-to-corner and resides close to the windshield rim. The seats are clad in leather, offer impressive lateral support and heating/ventilation functions. A two-zone climate control system and eight audio speakers are included in the base spec, too.

The GAC Aion Hyper SSR is coming to the market in three main versions. All three send 1,224 PS (1,207 hp / 900 kW) and 1,230 Nm (907 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels. The motor count is unknown, but GAC emphasizes that the differences are in actual on-track performance. The most affordable of the three versions needs 2.3 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph). The middle spec costs 1,386,000 Yuan and concludes its sprint in 1.9 seconds. The top spec costs 300,000 Yuan more and has the same launch time, but offers track-ready chassis and suspension.

The top speed is capped at 250 km/h (155 mph) in all cases. The battery can hold 75 kilowatt-hours of power and yields up to 506 km (314 miles) of range on a charge.
