Geely announces a new EV brand

The Chinese automaker will be launching another sub-brand dedicated to all-electric and hybrid vehicles. According to Geely’s Weibo page, it will be called Yinhe, which stands for ‘Milky Way’.

The first production car will be a sedan, which Geely apparently revealed in late January (see video). Back then, the company did not say it would be released under its own branding.

Yinhe will be targeting the middle-class and the top segment of the Chinese car market to avoid cannibalizing the company’s other EV sales. For instance, there is a sub-brand called Geometry, which sells rather affordable electric vehicles, while Zeekr handles the premium segment.

Judging by the teaser pics posted along with the announcement, the first car will be fastback-shaped with sporty outlines and very slim headlights. Parts of the front seats can be seen as well, but we wonder whether the production car will have striped upholstery or it is just an ad move. As for the size, the new model will be around 4.9 meters (16 feet) long.

The official introduction of the Yinhe brand will take place on February 23, 2023. It is unknown whether Geely plans to unveil the first production car at the event or just a prototype.
