Genesis’ latest coupe EV to debut on March 31

Genesis has shared a teaser vid of an upcoming two-door concept car running on electric power alone. The reveal will take place in South Korea on Wednesday, March 31.

The marque’s first production EV was expected to be a close relative of the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, but it now turns out that it is actually a coupe with a new headlight design, an elongated hood and a rotary ball-shaped drive more selector.

No other information is available right now, but we expect the new Genesis to be a market-friendly implementation of the three-year-old Essentia Concept. That car debuted without any technical specifications aside from a sprint time (3 seconds flat for a 0-60 mph run). It had been conceptualized as the marque’s most expensive vehicle coming out in a limited series.

In all likelihood, the newcomer is based on the E-GMP platform and shares its underpinnings with the Ioniq 6, which in turn draws inspiration from the Prophecy Concept. The sales should start next year.

Powered by one or two motors, the car will likely offer a choice between RWD and AWD. It will probably have around 306 PS (302 hp / 225 kW) and 605 Nm (450 lb-ft) of torque hitting the wheels, while a 72.6-kWh battery will give it around 500 kilometers (310 miles) of WLTP-rated range. Earlier rumors said that Genesis would be making a coupe based on either the 2015 Hyundai Vision G Concept or the 2016 New York Concept, or both. It remains to be seen whether any of this conjecture survives the test of time.
