Rumor: Genesis G70 to get Hyundai Sonata N-Line’s engine

The smallest-sized sedan on the Genesis lineup will not get its facelift until 2021, but a source claims that the engine specs have already been decided upon.

Specifically, it is reported that the new G70 will get the same powertrain as the new Hyundai Sonata N-Line. This primarily means a 2.5-liter gasoline turbo engine rated at 293 hp (218 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque.

The current-gen G70 (see the photos and the video) ships with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine available in versions ranging up to 252 hp (188 kW), and a 3.3-liter V6 with 365 hp (272 kW). You may also opt for a turbocharged 2.2-liter diesel unit with 199 hp (149 kW) at the crank.

The alleged new engine is not compatible with the six-speed manual transmission the sedan currently ships with. Perhaps the new eight-speed DCT will be the only option for this mill. This does not seem critical, because manual gear shifting is unpopular with the customers (stick-driven G70 sales only constitute 2% of the model’s total sales in North America).
