McLaren F1 author previews his next V12 supercar

Gordon Murray, automotive designer and founder of Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA), has revealed the first supercar sketches from the recently founded Gordon Murray Special Vehicles (GMSV) division.

The S1 LM is a mid-engined coupe based on much of the same tech as the GMA T.50 and inspired by the legendary McLaren F1 GTR, which was originally designed by Murray. Once produced, the endurance racer proceeded to claim the 1st, the 3rd, the 4th, the 5th and the 13th places at various Le Mans races roughly three decades ago.

The new supercar seen here is being created upon request from a big fan of Murray’s creations in general and the F1 GTR in particular. It combines retro and modern styling cues in a completely new, all-carbon body sitting even lower than the original T.50.

The headlights, the body kit with its fixed rear wing, the roof scoop and the shoulder line all contain references to the McLaren racer. The wheels are also inspired by the F1 GTR, and the interior is awash with carbon-fiber décor. Compared to the T.50, only the steering wheel and the door panels are new. The dashboard is technically new, too, but the gauges look about the same.

Powering the ride is a naturally aspirated Cosworth V12 stroked out from 3.9 to 4.3 liters of displacement. It still redlines at 12,100 RPM, but produces over 710 PS (700 hp / 522 kW). This puts it in between the street-legal T.50 model with its 663 PS (654 hp / 488 kW) and the track-only version with 730 PS (720 hp / 537 kW).

A custom exhaust system made from Inconel culminates in four tips grouped in the middle of the rear diffuser. The transmission is six-speed manual and incorporates parts from both the T.50 and the T.50s. The car benefits from a new suspension geometry and different shock absorbers.

The first GMA S1 LM is scheduled for production in 2026.
