Matt, 23, had always dreamt of a campervan, but only had enough money for this GMC Kodiak-based ambulance car. No big deal!
He began by throwing out the medical equipment, freeing up more than 3 metric tons (6,900 lbs, to be exact) of cargo capacity. He used it to install a full-fledged bathroom with a shower cabin, a kitchenette, a sink and numerous storage cabinets. He painted the roof of the cabin with a special reflective paint to prevent it from overheating under hot sun, trimmed the van with insulating materials, and added a climate control system.
When all was done, the motorhome weighed in at a whopping 8,164 kilos (18,000 lbs), so he swapped the standard engine out for a turbocharged diesel mill rated at 900 hp (671 kW) and 1,491 Nm (1,100 lb-ft) of torque. Turning on the Eco mode drops the output to 600 hp (447 kW), but makes the exhaust much cleaner.
Other notable upgrades included an electronically adjustable suspension lift (up to 220 mm / 8.5 inches), 40-inch off-road tires, and solar panels for charging the on-board power network.
