GMC patents ‘ZRX’, could be a performance trim of its Canyon pickup

General Motors has applied for the trademark ‘ZRX’, which the company used for the performance version of its discontinued 2003 GMC Sonoma pickup truck. Nowadays, the Canyon truck depicted here holds the market niche previously occupied by the Sonoma. As such, chances are good it will be getting a high-end version soon.

The most powerful Canyon out there packs a 3.6-liter, naturally aspirated V6 engine rated at 312 hp (233 kW) and 373 Nm (275 pound-feet) of torque. General Motors has stronger engines on the lineup: for instance, the Chevrolet Silverado ships with choice between a 2.7-liter turbo six rated at 314 hp (235 kW) and 472 Nm (348 lb-ft) and a 4.3-liter non-turbo unit with 289 hp (216 kW) and 414 Nm (305 lb-ft). The ZRX could get either.

The special version of the truck will also likely feature reduced ride height along with stiffer suspension.

It remains unannounced whether the ZRX trim will emerge in the current or the next generation of the Canyon. The pickup has a facelift planned for 2021 and a new generation coming up around 2023.
