GMC has unveiled the off-road-capable AT4 version of its Canyon truck in January this year and will be amending it with the Off-Road Performance package soon.
The new trim raises the suspension a bit further and changes the front bumper geometry so that the approach angle can be 35% higher than before (30 degrees). The 4mm aluminum skid plates now don’t just protect the transfer case, but also cover the steering mechanism, the front diff lock, the oil sump and the lower radiator, resulting in far superior protection on bumpy roads. Elsewhere, the exhaust finishrs are now black and so are the 17-inch wheels.
The standard AT4 comes powered by a 3.6-liter gasoline V6 capable of 312 PS (308 hp / 229 kW) and 373 Nm (275 lb-ft) of torque. Those who would rather like a turbo diesel may opt for a 2.8-liter mill rated at 183 PS (180 hp / 135 kW) and 500 Nm (370 lb-ft).
The hardcore AT4 will arrive to the showrooms later this year, although there has been no mention of the pricing yet. The trim launched in January cost U.S. $39,395 and included AWD, 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires and an Eaton G80 limited-slip differential at the rear end.
Once the GMC Canyon AT4 Off-Road Performance hits the road, it will compete against the likes of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and the Ford Ranger Tremor. Both feature all-terrain rubber, potent underbody protection, Fox suspension components, and Multimatic lifts.
