General Motors plans to ramp up EV production for the rest of the year

Rory Harvey, executive VP of General Motors North America, said earlier this week that the corporation would be able to sort out all its supply issues in the second half of 2023 and intensify electric vehicle production to address growing backorder queues. Per Carscoops, GMC has only managed to produce a meager 49 Hummer EV pickups since the start of the year.

GM execs tend to blame component supply shortages for this, particularly the lack of suitable power cells. Harvey reiterated the same statement, saying that it was a serious issue from the production numbers perspective, but assured us that the company was almost past that stage and ramping up its output.

For her own part, GM CEO Mary Barra said she believed these electrification issues were simply ‘growth challenges’. As GM continues its transformation from a traditional automobile manufacturer into a zero-emission vehicle company, such setbacks are inevitable, according to her.

No specific production targets have been named. Aside from GMC, poor H1 2023 results were reported by Cadillac, which had only managed to churn out around 3,000 Lyriq EV units. The production of the all-electric commercial van named Brightdrop started only to halt again due to a battery shortage.
