Meet the McMurtry Speirling, a one-seat hyper-EV going 0-300 km/h in 9 s

British startup firm McMurtry has crashed the Goodwood party with a no-holds-barred electric racecar named the Speirling (Irish for ‘thunderstorm’).

The cabin only fits the driver, who sits in the middle under a glass dome. There are aerodynamic trim pieces all around, the body kit almost touches the ground, and a turbo fan in the back sucks the air from under the bottom, producing up to 500 kg (1,100 lbs) of extra downforce.

The traction battery comes in at 60 kWh and is distributed evenly around the cabin, rather than being located under the floor, like in most modern designs. The curb weight lies below one metric ton (2,200 lbs).

Crucially, the development team claims the car needs nine seconds flat to zap from a standstill to 300 kilometers per hour (0-186 mph). It also has enough charge for between 30 and 60 minutes of track time.

According to McMurtry Managing Director Thomas Yates, the car has been designed from the ground up with no particular set of racing regulations in mind, and the main goal was to design the absolute best vehicle in EV racing. Going forward, the company plans to promote the marque and polish the prototype enough to begin participating in races. Customer deliveries should begin after that stage.
