Hennessey Venom F5 crashes after hitting 400 km/h

Things went wrong for Hennessey when it conducted another planned test of its Venom F5 hypercar at the Kennedy Space Center runway. According to CarBuzz quoting the company, the car succeeded in going past the 400 km/h (248 mph) mark but had an incident shortly afterwards.

Testing new aerodynamic components was one of the objectives for the day. One of them malfunctioned at a high speed, leading to the car losing its downforce and the driver losing control. The prototype vehicle ended up considerably damaged, but the pilot was lucky enough to walk away from the incident.

Hennessey never specified what exactly was being tested. It did post a single new photo of the car, showing it without its massive rear wing. We suppose that the wing – which is included in the standard Venom F5 trim specification – could have been removed to reduce drag. It could also have resulted in the car getting dangerously low downforce numbers at higher accelerations.
