The 4th-gen Honda City sedan/saloon, which you can see on the photos here, has been in production for five years, and it looks like the next generation will debut at the 2019 Bangkok Motor Show starting on November 25.
The currently available City comes based on the technical components of the Fit/Jazz hatchback. It is mainly sold in South America, Southeastern Asia, India, China (localized as ‘Honda Greiz’), and Japan (‘Honda Grace’). The Fit/Jazz has only recently been updated, so we’d expect lots of new tech for the sedan as well.
No official images of the car are available to date, just this recent video briefly touching upon the history of the model. However, car spotters have already photographed the Mk5 City a few times and made a few conclusions. Among other things, the fifth-gen sedan looks less curvy/rounded than the hatchback it is based upon. For its own part, Honda promises a design that is ‘luxurious and sporty.’
Aside from this, Honda has confirmed that the new City will ship with a turbocharged engine with 33% better fuel efficiency (no other data provided). Thai media unofficially claim that it is a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder mill rated at 120 hp (90 kW) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) of torque, which can work with a six-speed manual or CVT transmission. The old City packs a 1.5-liter non-turbo V4 with 117 hp (87 kW) at the crank, which can use either a five-speed manual gearbox or a CVT.
The Indian version of the car will likely continue shipping with its 1.5-liter non-turbo gas engine and 1.5-liter diesel with 100 hp (75 kW). That said, a mild hybrid might also enter the lineup later on. In Japan, the Honda Grace packs a full-fledged PHEV system based on the 1.5-liter V4 mentioned above. Whether things will change - and how - remains to be seen.
