World Car of the Year award reveals short list of winners

The jury of the World Car of the Year has come up with a short list of ten candidates for the title consisting of models made in the USA, Europe, Japan and Korea. The competition this year includes five special nominations, such as Best EV.

The short list includes the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Lexus NX, Honda Civic, Genesis G70, Hyundai Tucson, Cupra Formentor, Kia EV6, Audi Q4 e-tron, Ioniq 5, and the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86 duo sharing the same platform and tech.

The Ioniq 5 and Mach-E will contend in the EV category against the BMW iX, Audi e-tron GT and Mercedes-Benz EQS. The Best Design award has nearly all the same EVs listed for it, except for the iX, which doesn’t make the cut and yields the line to the EV6 instead.

The Toyota Yaris Cross, Renault Kiger, Opel Mokka, Dacia Sandero and VW Taigun compete in the Urban Car segment. The Premium category also includes the omnipresent iX and EQS along with some less obvious choices, such as the Audi Q5 Sportback and the Genesis GV70. Wrapping up the Premium list is none other than Volvo C40 Recharge, the Swedish company’s only entry in the entire competition this year.

Finally, there is also the Sports Car award that sees the BRZ/GR86, BMW M3 and M4, VW Golf GTI/R, e-tron GT and 911 GT3 fighting for it. Like the Volvo mentioned above, the 911 GT3 is the only Porsche entry on the list.
