Honda has started what is already being called this year’s largest automotive recall campaign in the United States. It spans 56 models across the Honda and Acura brands and comes up to 2.6 million vehicles. According to the NHTSA, a faulty fuel pump is to blame.
All potentially affected (=unsafe) cars have components by Denso installed. The fuel pump impeller from this particular vendor can sometimes undergo a slight deformation and scrape the housing of the pump causing the engine to fail and cut off. This may lead to the car stopping in the middle of the road, potentially leading to a crash.
The company stresses that it has yet to hear about any incidents or injuries linked to this specific issue. Despite that, it has already replaced the faulty pump on over 4,000 vehicles as a free warranty service.
The list of affected models mentions such popular ones as Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, Odyssey, and some U.S. exclusives. Many Acura MDX, NSX, RDX and TLX models are affected as well. The important thing to keep in mind is that all affected examples were manufactured from 2017 to 2020. The repairs are going slower than they could, though, because Honda can’t get enough replacement parts in time.
