Rumor: Civic Type R to arrive in 2021, remain non-electric

Reports are coming in from unofficial sources that the eleventh-gen Civic Type R will bow in Europe later this year with a slightly revised turbo four-cylinder and no electrified options.

It is reported that the company plans to electrify the performance-oriented Civic – the last remaining non-hybridized model in the EU range – starting with the generation after the next one. As a front-wheel-drive car packing 320 PS (316 hp / 235 kW), the upcoming Gen.12 is considered powerful enough to justify launching it with current specs. The only improvement should concern the maximum torque (up to 400 Nm / 295 pound-feet).

The sources claim that suspension and limited-slip differential will be tweaked for performance, and a new infotainment system will appear inside boasting a nine-inch touchscreen panel. Digital dashboard will allegedly be available as an option.

The standard Civic Mk12 should debut this spring, and the Type R should follow a few months later.
