Honda fans in Japan will be able to see the next-gen Civic Type R with their own eyes when the Tokyo Auto Salon opens on January 14, 2022. It will not be a launch event, however: the hot hatch will debut as a camouflaged prototype.
As such, it remains unknown just how much information the manufacturer will be willing to share with us. Honda says it will play a ‘dynamic video’ that will showcase the Type R from all aspects. Given that the car is due out sometime in 2022, the prototype will likely be very close to its final production state.
The company calls it ‘the most efficient Type R of all’, so chances are it will be powered by a four-cylinder engine paired with a manual gearbox. The current generation churns out 310 PS (306 hp / 228 kW), but we expect the next one to raise the bar – possibly as high as 400 PS (394 hp / 294 kW).
