Yes, you’ve read this correctly: The Japanese vehicle manufacturer Honda has unveiled a pickup truck concept based on the Civic Type R hatchback. The premiere took place during the SMMT Test Day, a recurring event held by dealerships and manufacturers in Great Britain.
The car goes under the name of Honda Project P and utilizes the pre-series version of the Civic Type R platform. The show copy was assembled at the company’s works in Swindon, England. Engineers only had to re-shape its rear part (i.e., the one past the B-pillars) into a spacious bed.
The car still holds on to its stock 2.0L turbocharged engine good for 320 hp (240 kW) and 400 Nm (295 kW) of torque, coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox. It can accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds and may ultimately climb past 265 km/h (200 mph).
Available operation modes include Racing, Sports, and Comfort. Once selected, they adjust the key units and components of the car accordingly.
There will be no mass-market release of the Honda Project P hot hatch/pickup truck hybrid. Upon looking at it, someone in Honda management has decided to permanently demote it to the function of a garden supplies carrier.
