At the recently concluded Olympic Games in Tokyo, China scored 2nd in an unofficial ranking by award count, having brought home 38 gold medals. Premium automaker Hongqi has decided to gift each winner an H9 sedan.
A total of 52 champions will be receiving cars worth over 19,000,000 Yuan in total, or nearly $3,000,000 in U.S. dollars. The 32 silver and 18 bronze winners will be given the same cars for free, but on a temporary basis.
The Hongqi H9 came out in 2020 as a vehicle designed by Giles Taylor, ex-Rolls Royce stylist, which explains the obvious parallels. It is now obtainable with gasoline engines rated at 252 and 272 PS (249 and 268 hp / 185 and 200 kW, respectively). A long-wheelbase version debuted last fall with 200 mm (8 inches) of added length, but the Olympic winners will be getting standard-wheelbase cars with the lesser 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder under the hood. On a plus side, every car will be fully loaded with options.
