China-based premium car manufacturer Hongqi is busy testing a new generation of its L5 saloon. Back when the company sold its cars exclusively to CCP members, the model was considered something of a ‘big shot’s limo’.
According to AutoHome, the model will retain its retro design while getting an updated interior architecture and exterior styling. The technical specifications will be announced later.
The prototype spotted on the streets the other day was wrapped in camo and looked nearly identical to its predecessor (see video). However, its radiator grille was visibly larger – just like on all more recent Hongqi models.
The front bumper was also different, and the same can be said about the rear end. AutoHome points out that the car has grown visibly longer – primarily in the rear bench area.
As for the cabin, it resembles that of any other premium saloon, including those from Europe. There are big screens at the front and individual seats in the back separated by a console providing HVAC and infotainment controls.
The first generation shipped with a six-liter V12 rated at 408 PS (402 hp / 300 kW), but rumors are claiming the V12 will no longer be available. If we had to guess, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 of the latest Hongqi LS7 seems like the best candidate for the replacement. That powertrain makes between 360 and 380 horsepower.
In earlier news, we learned that Hongqi was getting four other new cars ready to rumble – a sporty sedan and three SUVs targeting different market segments.
