General Motors considering reviving ‘Hummer’ as an EV marque

The senior management of General Motors is seriously considering the viability of reviving the Hummer marque, nine years after the production came to a halt in 2010. According to the CEO of the group, the brand name can be re-used for all-electric vehicle production.

Discussions are ongoing to determine which ones of the existing car models could be converted into EVs. Possible options include the Cadillac Escalade, the Chevrolet Suburban, and the GMC Sierra and Yukon. The company may also want to attach the Hummer badge to its future full-size pickup trucks.

According to the existing strategy, GM will be releasing 20 EVs until 2023. Compact and mid-sized urban vehicles and crossovers will be the first to enter the market, followed by full-fledged all-electric SUVs.

The idea of producing battery-powered Hummers is not entirely new. Two years ago, Kreisel Electric built one such vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger, a movie star, California ex-governor and avid environmentalist. His custom Hummer H1 came equipped with a 100 kilowatt-hour battery and could travel as far as 300 kilometers (186 miles) prior to needing a recharge.
