Watch Hummer H1 go up against three other cars in a tug-of-war contest

CarWOW has treated us to another fun video, pitting a 20-year-old Hummer H1 truck up against the latest Mercedes-AMG G 63. The G-Wagon ended up needing serious help as the competition progressed.

In its newest generation, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 is no slouch at all, packing a 4.0-liter V8 TT rated at 585 hp (436 kW) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque. A true off-roader at heart, it features all-wheel drive, as many as three diff locks and a reduction gear. All of this explains the curb weight of 2.5 metric tons (ca. 5,500 pounds).

But even these specs proved insufficient in a tug-of-war contest against the Hummer H1, which had the advantage of grippy off-road tires (the G-Class came to the competition wearing standard road rubber). The extra traction proved enough for the Hummer’s 6.5-liter turbocharged diesel V8 to bring the truck victory, despite only 197 hp (147 kW) and 583 Nm (430 lb-ft) of torque reaching the wheels at most. Its greater weight of 3.6 tonnes (nearly 8,000 lbs) also played a role.

The crew teamed the G-Class up with a Suzuki Jimny for the next test. The compact SUV weighs in at just 1.1 tonnes (2,425 lbs) and normally sends 105 hp (78 kW) along with 130 Nm (96 lb-ft) of torque to the road, but this certainly wasn’t the case here.

In the end, a Mitsubishi L200 Diesel Turbo joined the fray with 1.9 tonnes (4,200 lbs), 150 hp (112 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of its own. Watch the video to find out how it all ended.
