Hyundai Kona goes hybrid

Up until now, the Hyundai Kona SUV has been available in three powertrain versions: gasoline, diesel, and all-electric. A hybrid variant will joins the range soon, though, with sales in Europe scheduled for August 2019.

The new Hyundai Kona Hybrid has the same drivetrain configuration as the Kia Niro: a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 106 hp (79 kW) assisted by a small electric motor adding 43 hp (32 kW). Linked to a six-speed DCT transmission, the duo joins the efforts for 141 hp (105 kW) and 264 Nm (195 lbĂ—ft) total.

The setup draws its electric power from a miniature 1.56 kWh battery that charges itself up when coasting or braking. The SUV needs 11.2 seconds to get running at 100 km/h (62 mph) and tops out at 160 km/h (99 mph).

Compared to its peers, the Hybrid variant features a larger digital dashboard that additionally displays relevant runtime data for the hybrid powertrain. It also ships with a wireless charger and an entertainment system with a 10.3-inch display.
