Hyundai Kona Electric explodes just sitting in its garage

These pics from Canada are the world’s first documentary evidence of an all-electric SUV Hyundai Kona exploding for no apparent reason. According to its owner, Piero Cosentino, the car was standing idle in his garage when a powerful explosion happened all of a sudden. Reportedly, it was not charging at the time.

Cosentino, who lives in Montreal, bought his Hyundai Kona last spring. Last Friday, he smelled something burning and then saw thick clouds of black smoke erupting from his own garage. He ran out of the house and saw the roof partially collapsed and the door blasted open by the explosion.

Multiple fire brigades, 30 people in total, helped extinguish the fire. An investigation was initiated to establish the exact cause of the combustion. According to Louise Desrosiers, head of the local fire service, it was the battery car that was at the epicenter of the fire.

No video footage of the incident was recorded, but you may have a closer look at the South Korean EV if you watch the attached video.

The Hyundai Kona Electric premiered in February 2018. Two battery sizes are available on the market today: 39.2 kWh (300 km / 185 miles max. range) and 64 kWh (470 km / 290 miles max. range). It is not specified which one Cosentino owned.

This is decidedly the first time something like this happens to the model since its launch. That said, other EVs were known to catch fire under certain rare conditions before. Fior instance, a Tesla Model S began smoking and ultimately exploded just sitting on a parking lot a few months ago.
