Hyundai has come to the North American Commercial Vehicle Show in Atlanta with the HDC-6 Neptune Concept, a partly self-driving large truck powered by hydrogen fuel cell tech.
Technically a Class 8 semi truck, the Neptune draws inspiration from the high-speed express trains of the 1930s. The huge windshield up front is more than just a beauty feature, though. Aside from providing great unrestricted field of view, it doubles as a HUD display where you can display any route-specific information you may need. The equipment also includes a digital dashboard and a passenger’s seat that can unfold into a bed.
Hyundai refrained from announcing tech specs, but pointed out that it believed fuel cells were the ideal choice for trucks thanks to their respectable range potential, fast reloading, and high payload.
A powertrain based on hydrogen fuel cells is essentially electric, wherein the power comes from a controlled chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Water is the only byproduct of the process.
